Lesson 23

Grammar

Would

Would, assim como will e do, é um verbo auxiliar. Ele forma o tempo verbal que, em português, chamamos de futuro do pretérito simples.

De forma mais simples, podemos entender este tempo verbal como aquele que termina em ia.

Por exemplo, faria, gostaria, tentaria, levaria.

Ele expressa um futuro possível de um passado imaginário.

Porém, por enquanto, vamos aprender a usar este tempo verbal de uma forma bem específica. Ou seja, para expressar desejos e fazer pedidos de forma educada.

  • I would like to go to the movies.
    • Eu gostaria de ir ao cinema.
  • I would not like to travel today.
    • Eu não gostaria de viajar hoje.
  • Would you like to watch that movie?
    • Você gostaria de assistir aquele filme?
  • Would you help me with my homework?
    • Você me ajudaria com meus deveres? (poderia me ajudar)
  • Would you teach her the lesson, please?
    • Você ensinaria a lição a ela, por favor? (poderia ensinar)
  • Would you go with me?
    • Você iria comigo? (poderia ir)

Forma

A forma do would é a mesma que a do will.

Affirmative sentences: Usamos o would antes do verbo que queremos modificar. Também podemos abreviar o would para 'd.
I would like to go to the movies.
I'd like to go to the movies.
Negative sentences: Usamos o would seguido de not antes do verbo que queremos modificar. Também podemos usar a contração wouldn't.
I would not like to travel today.
I wouldn't like to travel today.
Interrogative sentences: Usamos o would antes do sujeito.
Would you like to watch that movie?

Este verbo auxiliar não se modifica para he, she ou it.

Então, temos:

I would like to go to the movies.
He would like to go to the movies.
I wouldn't like to go to the movies.
She wouldn't like to go to the movies.

Lesson 24

Grammar

Some

Na lição 20 vimos o uso das expressões "there is" e "there are". Com frequência, elas vem seguidas das palavras some, any e no.

Hoje veremos o uso da palavra some.

Some pode ser traduzido para português de duas formas: um pouco de e alguns.

A diferença é o uso com countable e uncountable nouns.

Examples

Countable Uncountable
some cars some water
some houses some time
some computers some money

Atenção! Note que some + countable, o substantivo está sempre no plural.

Uso

Some é, na maior parte das vezes, utilizado em frases afirmativas. Veremos na próxima lição que usamos any para as frases negativas.

Há, no entanto, um caso onde usamos o some em perguntas.

Quando oferecemos algo, ou esperamos uma resposta afirmativa, podemos usar o some para fazer perguntas.

  • Would you like some water?
  • Do you need some time to think?

Podemos seguir a palavra some da preposição + artigo of the para falar: um pouco do, um pouco da, alguns dos, algumas das

  • Some of the people want to go home.
  • We will give some of the money to charity.
  • Some of the projects are ready.

Note! Nunca utizamos artigo antes de pronomes possessivos.

Então teríamos:

  • Some of my friends are coming to the party. (não some of the my friends)

Lesson 26

Grammar

Usando o 's como possessivo

Cars
Cars are a very important part of American life. For some people, it's just status and for others it's a necessity. Many people spend 4 to 5 hours a day in a car. Some use this time to eat, to read the newspaper or a book. Many Americans spend a lot of money every month on their cars. In Los Angeles, for example, where the population is approximately 8 million, there are more than 6 million cars. America today has drive-thru at the bank, at the cleaners, at the pharmacy, for a hamburger, and even to get married in Las Vegas. It's hard to imagine how Americans would live without a car.
  1. Why are cars important for Americans?
  2. What do they do in their cars?
  3. What kind of drive-thru do they have?
  4. Do you have a car?
  5. Is a car important in your life? Why?
