The man driving the sports car was very fast. He wanted to get through the yellow light but when he got closer it turned red. On the other street, a tow truck started to move forward. The driver of the sports car tried to stop but it was too late. He smashed into the side of the tow truck. The man in the sports car got out of his car very slowly. He had a cut on his head and he was stumbling around. The man in the tow truck was not hurt. He called an ambulance with his cellphone. By then a crowd was gathering. Some people were watching from distance, others were helping the injured man. Then the ambulance arrived. The paramedics put the injured man on a stretcher and drove him to the hospital.

Grammar

Agora que já sabemos utilizar o Present Continuous, podemos facilmente aprender o Past Continuous.

A forma é a seguinte: [was/were + present participle]

Ou seja, conjugamos o verbo to be no passado:

to be
I was
You were
He was
She was
It was
We were
You were
They were

E ao próximo verbo, adicionamos -ING.

Veja alguns exemplos:

  • They were exercising when she arrived.
    • Eles estavam se exercitando quando ela chegou.
  • Were they exercising when she arrived?
    • Eles estavam se exercitando quando ela chegou?
  • They were not exercising when she arrived.
    • Eles não estavam se exercitando quando ela chegou.

Usamos o Past Continuous das seguintes formas:

  • I was going home when he called.
    • Eu estava indo para a minha casa quando ela ligou.
  • When it started to rain, she was getting ready to leave.
    • Quando começou a chover, ela estava se arrumando para sair.

  • I was watching a movie, so I didn't see you come in.
    • Eu estava assistindo ao filme, por isto não te vi entrar.

  • While she was shopping last night, we organized a surprise party for her.
    • Enquanto ela estava fazendo compras ontem à noite, nós organizamos uma festa surpresa para ela.
