Expressions + -ing

Após algumas expressões também adicionamos a terminação -ing ao verbo.

1. it's no use

• It's no use calling her now. She will never forgive us.
• It's no use telling them the truth. They will not understand the situation.

2. there's no point in

• There's no point in selling the car right now if you will only need the money next year. (simple present)
• There was no point in staying until the end of the class. That's why we decided to leave. (simple past)
• There was no point in you telling her about our affair. You only complicated things. (expression + object + verb)

3. it's (not) worth

• They have left already. It's not worth going over there now.
• It's not worth risking your life for so little money.
• The new book that just came out is definitely worth reading.
• It's worth reading all the books in the saga "A Song of Ice and Fire".

4. have (difficulty/trouble/a hard time)

• Some people have difficulty making friends.
• I had no trouble following her.

5. a waste of time/money

• It's a waste of time watching soap operas.
• It's a waste of time hanging out with her. She has nothing to add.

6. spend/waste (time)

• I spent 5 hours trying to convince her not to go.
• I wasted the whole morning fixing my bike.

7. go -ing

Usamos go -ing para uma serie de atividades, principalmente esportes.

• Would you like to go shopping with me this afternoon?
• I love to go skiing in the winter.
• I always go sightseeing when I travel to Italy.
• I might go swimming later today. Would you like to come?

• I dream one day I will be able to go sailing.

1. Use the expression in parentheses to reply to the following situations. You might be asked to write the answers down or just say them out-loud.

a. ( it's no use , invite ) - You wanna go to the movies tonight. You wish your best friend could go with you but, unfortunately, she's sick.

Answer: It's no use inviting her to go to the movies.

b. ( there's no point in , withdraw ) - You were looking for an ATM so you could withdraw some money to pay a bill. Now that you finally found one you realize it's too late and that you might as well pay it on-line tomorrow.

c. ( it's not worth ) You have the choice of seeking love or seeking fame, but you can only choose one. You realize fame will never bring you happiness.

d. ( have difficulty ) She doesn't like hurting people's feelings. That's why it's hard for her to tell people the truth sometimes.

e. ( it's a waste of time ) People are born with different talents. You wish you could be a famous singer but, honestly, you're terrible. Taking singing lessons will accomplish nothing.

f. ( spend days ) You have a big decision to make. You have been thinking about it for the last few days.

g. ( go swimming ) It is a warm summer day and you have the day off from work. You love to swim. Your deepest desire right now is:
