Grammar
Superlative Adjectives
Na lição 32 aprendemos a usar comparative adjectives. Neste, veremos superlative adjectives, que, em vez de comparar uma coisa com a outra, compara algo ou alguém com com grupo.
Ex.: She is the tallest girl in her class. -> Ela é a menina mais alta da sua sala.
Assim como os comparativos, os superlativos também se separam em duas categorias: short e long.
Short
Consideramos adjetivos curtos:
- Aqueles com apenas uma sílaba: big, old, small, fast, etc.
- Aqueles com duas sílabas terminados em y: happy, silly, pretty, etc.
Regras:
1. Normalmente adicionamos the -est.
- She is the oldest in her family.
- Ela é a mais velha da sua família.
2. Se o adjetivo terminar em e apenas adicionamos -st. (nice -> nicest)
- Alexandra gave me the nicest gift.
- Alexandra me deu o presente mais legal.
3. Se o adjetivo terminar em cvc (consoante + vogal + consoante), dobramos a última consoante. (big -> biggest)
- My house is the biggest on the street.
- A minha casa é a maior da rua.
4. Se o adjetivo terminar em y, tiramos o y e acrescentamos -iest. (happy -> happiest)
- Today was the happiest day of my life.
- Hoje foi o dia mais feliz da minha vida.
Long
Consideramos adjetivos longos:
- Aqueles com duas sílabas não terminados em y: modern, pleasant, etc
- Aqueles com três sílabas ou mais: expensive, beautiful, etc
Regras:
Para adjetivos longos temos apenas uma regra: acrescentamos the most antes do adjetivo.
- I want my website to be the most modern.
- Eu quero que o meu site seja o mais moderno. (de todos)
- This computer is the most expensive in the store.
- Este computador é o mais caro da loja.
Irregular adjectives
Alguns adjetivos são irregulares e não seguem as regras acima. Neste caso, precisamos decorar as suas formas irregulares.
good → the best |
well (healthy) → the best |
bad → the worst |
far → the farthest/furthest |
- This cellphone is the best there is.
- Este celular é o melhor que existe.
EXERCISES
2. Give 6 examples of superlative adjectives, 3 short and 3 long adjectives.
Pronunciation
Examples | |
---|---|
law | thought |
war | north |
dwarf | claw |
saw | draw |
