Grammar

Comparative Adjectives

No nosso dia a dia, frequentemente comparamos uma coisa com a outra; dizemos que este é melhor que aquele, que um tal produto é mais barato que o outro.

Note que a palavra melhor é um adjetivo que nos permite comparar as coisas. Por isso, hoje vamos ver como usamos em inglês estes comparative adjectives.

Separamos eles em duas categorias: short e long.

Short

Consideramos adjetivos curtos:

  • Aqueles com apenas uma sílaba: big, old, small, fast, etc.
  • Aqueles com duas sílabas terminados em y: happy, silly, pretty, etc.

Regras:

1. Normalmente adicionamos -er.

Ex.: She is older than her sister. -> Ela é mais velha que a sua irmã.

2. Se o adjetivo terminar em e apenas adicionamos -r. (late -> later)

Ex.: I'll talk to you later. -> Falarei com você mais tarde.

3. Se o adjetivo terminar em cvc (consoante + vogal + consoante), dobramos a última consoante. (big -> bigger)

Ex.: My new house is bigger than the old one. -> Minha casa nova é maior do que a antiga.

4. Se o adjetivo terminar em y, tiramos o y e acrescentamos -ier. (happy -> happier)

Ex.: I am happier now that I am on vacations. -> Estou mais feliz agora que estou de férias.

Long

Consideramos adjetivos longos:

  • Aqueles com duas sílabas não terminados em y: modern, pleasant, etc
  • Aqueles com três sílabas ou mais: expensive, beautiful, etc

Regras:

Para adjetivos longos temos apenas uma regra: acrescentamos more antes do adjetivo.

Ex.: I want my website to look more modern. -> Eu quero que meu site tenha uma aparência mais moderna.

This computer is much more expensive than that one. -> Este computador é muito mais caro que aquele.

Irregular adjectives

Alguns adjetivos são irregulares e não seguem as regras acima. Neste caso, precisamos decorar as suas formas irregulares.

Adjective Comparative
good better
well (healthy) better
bad worse
far farther/further

Ex.: This cellphone is better than the other.

than

Com frequência precisamos usar a palavra than na frase significando "do que".

Ex.: Today you are slower than yesterday. -> Hoje você está mais lenta do que ontem.
