Quando duas coisas acontecem ao mesmo tempo, usamos -ing em um dos verbos.

She arrived home thinking about a solution for the problem. She was thinking about a solution when she arrived home.
I hung up the phone smiling because I had just been told I was accepted into Harvard. I hung up the phone and I smiled.


They had a conversation while having dinner. They had a conversation and had dinner at the same time.
