Part A

A regra desta lição é simples: verbo depois de preposição leva -ing.

Exemplo:

I am tired of working for you.

Preposição: of
Verbo: work

Alguns casos comuns:

verb + preposition + -ing
insist on think of pay for dream about get on with
approve of talk about agree on feel like work on
decide on decide against apologise for believe in depend on


Exemplos de uso:

  1. I want to go the movies, but he keeps insisting on going home.
  2. He's thinking of traving abroad.
  3. You will pay for making me wait.
  4. She always dreamed about being a princess.


2. they talked about moving to New Zealand. 3. I don't feel like going there tonight. 4. I'm thinking of buying a house in Shekou. 5. We decided against moving to New Zealand. 6. The President doesn't approve of drinking, that's why they removed the staff bar.

8. I am working on improving my spelling. 9. We depend on doing most of our business at Christmas. 10. Stop talking and get on with doing this exercise. 11. She doesn't believe in dieting, just lots of exercise. 12. I apologise for losing your essays. 13. He had to pay for drinking so much Champagne. 14. They couldn't agree on lowering tarriffs, so had to meet again later.

Exercises

1. Use the expression in parentheses to reply to the following situations. You might be asked to write the answers down or just say them out-loud.
a. ( insist on / trying out for the part ) - Jessica is sick. Her mother told her that if she goes out it will get worse. What should she avoid?
Answer: Jessica should avoid going out in the cold.
b. ( dislike / have to meet new people ) - Jonathan is socially awkward. He has a hard time meeting new people. What does he dislike?
2. Do this translation exercise.
3. Make sentences using the verbs found in the table above. Use the form "verb + preposition + -ing"
