Part A

verb + to ... / verb + object + to ...

Estes verbos são seguidos de "to". Seja com um objeto entre o verbo e o "to" ou sem.

verbs

expect	beg	mean	would prefer

Examples:

verb + to

They expected to win.
I asked to go home.
He only meant to help.
We would like to stay a bit longer.

verb + object + to

They expected me to win.
I asked her to go home.
He only meant for us to help.
We would like you to stay a bit longer.

Exercises:

1. Do this translation exercise.

2. Use the expression in parentheses to reply to the following situations. You might be asked to write the answers down or just say them out-loud.

a. ( want to ) - You just got home. You feel tired. You think that taking a shower is a good idea.

Answer: I want to take a shower.

b. ( wants me to ) - Your sister is planning a party. She has a lot of things to do and is asking for your help.

c. ( is begging to ) - A mother and a little girl are walking past a carnival. The little girl is doing all she can to convince her mother to go inside.

d. ( begged her to ) - You are planning a trip to Europe, but you would love to have company. So, you tried to convince your best friend to go with you.

e. ( helps to ) - Sometimes, listening to music is a good way of relaxing after a stressful day. So we say that music...

f. ( helped us to ) - Our parents gave us all the support we needed to grow and become mature people.

g. ( would prefer to ) - They are asking me to go to the mall, but I want to go home.

h. ( would prefer them to ) - Your friends came to visit you, but now they have to go. Yet, you wish they could stay.

3. Answer the following email. Give some suggestions using the expressions below.

Hey there,

I'm writing to ask for your advice on a problem I have at the moment. As you might already know, my boss is putting a lot of pressure on me to finish within the next two weeks the project I am currently working on, but I know I will need at least another week to do it well. I am afraid if I ask for more time he might think I am not doing a good job. Of course, he should realize that I am doing all this work alone when usually a team of three handle this kind of project. What do you think I should do?

Give the following opinions:

Ask the boss to help.
Tell the boss you would like one more week to work on the project.
Acknowledge he expects you to finish it on time, but say that it is just not possible.

Estes verbos seguem a forma: verb + object + to

Examples:

My parents taught me to never give up.
We need to persuade her to sell all her property.

Porém, na voz passiva eles seguem a forma: to be + verb + to

Examples:

I was reminded to take out the trash.
I was forced to come to the party.
She was invited to stay.
I was taught to never give up.
She needs to be persuaded to sell all her property.
