So you're cruising around the Internet and you see a link to an article from some trusted news source, and it's got a really intruiguing title, so you read it. And later you find out that that whole article was mostly false. What you thought was news, was really just gossip or conjecture.<br/>
So we've got Ryan Holiday here. He's a media manipulator and he explains how this happens:
<br/><br/>
<strong>Ryan</strong>: So what I quickly discovered is that the media was this sort of hierarchy or chain. The bottom you have small blogs who have small readerships but correspondingly low threshold for what they will and will not publish.

<br/><strong>Ryan</strong>: Say this blog publishes a rumor then Business Insider or The Huffington Post or Perez Hilton writes about it. And now, because of the stature of those sites, it becomes something that people are talking about on Twitter, on Facebook, on e-mail, they're chattering about it. And what happens is, producers for CNN, producers for a right wing talk radio, journalists for The New York Times - where do they find out the news? They're not out pounding the pavement like it's a hundred years ago. No, they're reading what people are chattering about online. And that cycle is hijacked by people like me who say, "Okay, if this blog here has the power to accidentally start a media firestorm by what it publishes, I'm going to get them to publish something that benefits me."
And later you find out that that whole article was mostly false. What you thought was news, was really just gossip or conjecture.
So we've got Ryan Holiday here. He's a media manipulator and he explains how this happens:
<br/><br/>
<strong>Ryan</strong>: So what I've quickly discovered is that the media was this sort of hierarchy or chain. The bottom you have small blogs who have small readerships but correspondingly low threshold for what they will and will not publish.
<strong>Ryan</strong>: Say this blog publishes a rumor then Business Insider or The Huffington Post or Perez Hilton writes about it. And now, because of the stature of those sites, it becomes something that people are talking about on Twitter, on Facebook, on e-mail, they're chattering about it, and what happens is, producers for CNN, producers for a right wing talk radio, journalists for The New York Times
And later you find out that that whole article was mostly false. What you thought was news, was really just gossip or conjecture.
So we've got Ryan Holiday here. He's a media manipulator and he explains how this happens:
Ryan: So what I've quickly discovered is that the media was this sort of hyerarchy or chain. The bottom you have small blogs who have small readerships but correspondingly
The Occupy movement grew suddenly and sustained longer than was first imagined. But now that the Occupy movement is shutting down for the winter, what will it be remembered for? One of their main rallying cries is "we are the 99%". It's a reference to this fact. Taking the entire population of the U.S. you will find that merely 1% own nearly 50% of all our wealth and with wealth comes power and more wealth. In fact you will see that the wealthiest 1% of Americans over the last 40 years have grown increasingly wealthier and wealthier, while the remaining 99% stay relatively stagnant. And while the 1% have been gaining more power they haven't always used it for the good of society.<br>
Okay then, regardless if you see this as a problem or not, what remains confusing for some people and plain frustrating to others is that nobody knows what Occupiers really want. Even the Occupiers themselves seem to have different reasons for occupying, making people think that they're just being immature. Movements should have a very clear goal like "let's elect this president" or "let's create these new laws". But the Occupy movement is different. It seems to be saying things like "let's pay attention to this issue", "let's have a conversation", "let's listen to each other, especially the marginalized, and see how we can agree." It doesn't have one charismatic leader but is decentralized. It doesn't have one plain agenda but thousands and thousands of voices connecting together. It is much like the difference between a typical model of top-down power in the way the Internet works. So it seems that Occupy Wall Street is an Internet era movement. You see what most people don't understand is that Occupy Wall Street is not acting like 20th century politics, but instead it seems to be prototyping something new and we will continue to see how it evolves.
So you're reading an article online when you get an instant message with a link to a funny photo, which of course you have to share. And now you are reading your Facebook News Wall, which send you to a video of a panda bear attacking a kid. And now you are reading Wikipedia to learn everything you can about the violent behavior of panda bears. And this is what 3 minutes on the Internet can be like.<br>
We live like this all the time and it has to have some kind of effect on us. The net is making us more superficial as thinkers. That is Nicholas Carr. He is the author of, "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains."<br>
To understand this whole thing better we need to go way back in time, to say, like, the prehistoric age. You wanted to know everything going on around you because the more you knew about your surroundings the less likely you were to get attacked by a predator. And there's even evidence that our brains release some dopamine - a pleasure producing neurotransmitter chemical - to reward us for seeking out and finding new information. So, getting distracted felt good and helped us stay alive, but the problem is that nowadays predators aren't much of an issue, but we still have the same brains. And also, there's the Internet, which is... It's an incredibly information rich environment, uh, that the net creates for us, and that's why we use it so much. I mean, sounds, pictures, words, text and what this tends to do is promote a sort of compulsive behavior in which we are constantly checking our smart phone, constantly glancing at our e-mail inbox: we're kind of living in this perpetual state of distraction and interruption, which is dangerous, because,
The Occupy movement grew suddenly and sustained longer than was first imagined.
